At the Fest: Lightning in a Bottle 2026
Adult summer camp exists, and it goes by Lightning in a Bottle.
From beginning my Lightning in a Bottle headbanging at the Stacks for Auracle to the hellscape that was Tejon Ranch traffic on Monday, I would not have had this past weekend any other way. Lightning in Bottle is a singularity; an event so special and unique, so transient and ephemeral, so complete in what it provides, it will leave you asking, when can I come back?
There is a reason it has a cult-like following and continues to survive in its independence through seemingly impossible challenges: COVID, festival commercialization, you name it. It is clear the organizers have committed to their grassroots, authentic, intentional planning, and it paid off with a sold-out LiB.
For most festivals that sell out, I usually feel it in my experience. Never-ending lines for food and bathrooms, complete standstills in massive crowds at stages… these things can ruin someone’s festival. I noticed none of that at Lightning in a Bottle. There was a plethora of food options, vendors, and bathroom areas. When you move through a crowd, people smile and cheer you on rather than hitting you with a stink eye for trying to find your friends. The community at this event is like none other, which makes it easy to meet new people, explore, and side quest.
This is one festival I can wholeheartedly say you can come to on your own. No one seems particularly committed to any group structure, and adopting a wandering soul in the crowd is commonplace. This energy is not by accident; it is intentionally planned, supported, and encouraged through the layout and programming of the festival.

At LiB, there is quite literally something going on for everyone at every hour of the day. Want to stay up until sunrise non-stop dancing? Follow the beautiful art cars into the wee hours of the morning. Want to go to bed right after the headliner and wake up for a vinyasa flow led lakeside in the morning sun? They have that too. Lecture on the state of psychedelics at Lightning? Dive right in. Or better yet, allow yourself to get lost in the delectable sauce that is LiB.
Most of the people I spoke to had no idea where they were at any given time, much less who was actually playing; and this is no slight to the DJs themselves, the lineup is AMAZING; but it simply is not the only selling point and not really the “point” of the festival. Being present, curious, and part of a community stumbling upon surprises, from clown contortionism to a Mary Droppinz set at the campgrounds, is what LiB is for. Really saying “Jesus, take the wheel” but in this case, Jesus is a human manifestation of LiB guiding us through Stacks, Woogie, Grand Artique, and more with no specific plan, just a good time.
Let’s break it down now:
My LiB Favorites:
Junkyard Stage Located right on the shores of Buena Vista Lake, this was the ideal spot for sunset grooves and late-night tech house. The DJs commanded the crowd from a stage straight out of a sci-fi hit; a ship called the “Junk Runner.” From an interactive lighting panel to seated areas inside the ship, you were literally transported to another realm. If you didn’t make it inside the ship, don’t fret. The full view from below is just as breathtaking, if not more. Centrally located, the Junkyard was one of our favorite meeting spots and a safe haven when we didn’t know where to go. You could show up and trust that whoever was playing would be killing it, no matter the time of day. My favorites on this stage: RICHE, HOVR, and Soraya.
Grand Artique & Pickles There is nothing that compares to a crisp, juicy pickle in the intense heat of a festival - and you don’t have to look very far at LiB. Grand Artique, festival icons for decades, provides scrumptious dills and much, much more: global brunch with Afromantis throwing intoxicating beats alongside on-stage arepas, late-night sets at the side-stage Petite Artique, and a trading post where you can find just about anything. Grand Artique is another staple you cannot miss.
Food
Eat your veggies and get your fiber at fests! Connection Café at Lightning Stage was my saving grace. Open late, serving comforting bowls with veggies and protein. I’m not sure I, or my sensitive stomach, would have made it through the weekend without them.
With an average temp around 90°F, which actually feels like 100 without shade and with much dancing, a girl needs a good frozen treat. Fro Go Fro Yo Truck provides Dole Whip, raspberry chocolate swirl, and more, topped with a myriad of flavors that patrons are willing to stand in line for. An oasis in the 2pm heat and dust.
Extremely solid pizza, cheese, meat, bread - what could be better for festival energy? The DoughLab is a LiB classic that does not disappoint, with locations next to Woogie and Thunder to satisfy all your desires across the festival. I hear the pepperoni pesto is to die for.
Sets
EREZ — First time in many years bringing a guitar onstage during her set to play live. Electric energy on Friday.
Auracle — I forgot my earplugs and was in pain from the bass, but I could not pull myself away because it was so electrifying.
Flava D — Nonchalantly throwing the nastiest bass and groove ever to grace a sunset. I felt honored to be in the presence of this set. Iconic.
Ladies of Leisure — Woogie. Dance. Happiness. There was nothing leisurely about this set; energy was up and life felt magical. These ladies are on the rise.
DJ Trixie Mattel — A PRODUCTION. Trixie dances, performs, AND DJs. Can we just take a second to appreciate this? I can barely talk and text at the same time. The set? So. Much. Fun.
J.Worra — This was J.Worra’s return to LiB and boy did she show up. There were quite literally no misses in this set. Seamless track selections that kept a massive Woogie crowd dancing and smiling. She crafted this set with intention and love, and it showed. One of my favorite sets of the weekend, no doubt.
RICHE — The comedown from Chase & Status was rough until I found myself at the Junkyard. Until 4am, RICHIE played banger after banger. I could have listened to her play until sunrise. I felt like I was hearing a royal decree from a queen.
Haute and Freddy — Smiles throughout the crowd, the most joyful dancing I saw all weekend. Their first set on a major stage in the sunlight, and it was such a cool moment to witness. More than held their own in a sea of EDM and shined bright like the stars they are.
Jayda G — Many people’s set of the weekend. She rocked the Woogie so hard the crowd was in a trance. Perfect set to revitalize a crowd on a Sunday - thank you G!
Soraya — Banger after banger after banger. The energy at the Junkyard was immaculate as the crowd grew and grew. Soraya called to wandering souls and intoxicated them with unique tracks and nonstop bass.
